The Wind $13.79 In late August of 2002, Warren Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a virulent and inoperable form of lung cancer; with his life expectancy expected to be no more than a few months, Zevon focused his dwindling energies on completing a final album, and The Wind, released a year after Zevon learned of his condition, was the result. With a back story like that, it's all but impossible to ignore the subtext of Zevon's mortality while listening to The Wind, though, thankfully, he's opted not to make an album about illness or death (ironically, he already did that with 2000's Life'll Kill Ya) or create a musical last will and testament. While The Wind occasionally and obliquely touches on Zevon's illness -- most notably the mournful "Keep Me in Your Heart" and the dirty blues raunch of "Rub Me Raw" -- in many ways it sounds like a fairly typical Warren Zevon album, though of course this time out the caustic wit cuts a bit deeper, the screeds against a world gone mad sound more woeful, and the love songs suggest higher emotional stakes than before. The Wind also lays in a higher compliment of celebrity guest stars than usual, and while obviously a lot of these folks are old friends wanting to help a pal in need, in some cases the ringers help to carry the weight for Zevon, who, while in good voice, can't summon up the power he did in his salad days. And remarkably, the trick works on several cuts; Bruce Springsteen's rollicking guest vocal on "Disorder in the House" offers just the kick the tune needed, Tom Petty's laid-back smirk brings a sleazy undertow to "The Rest of the Night," and Dwight Yoakam's harmonies on "Dirty Life and Times" are the perfect touch for the tune. In terms of material, The Wind isn't a great Zevon album, but it's a pretty good one; "El Amour de Mi Vida" is a simple but affecting look at lost love, "Prison Grove" is a superior character piece about life behind bars, and "Numb as a Statue," "Disorder in the House," and "Dirty Life and Times" prove the prospect of imminent death hasn't alleviated Zevon's cynicism in the least. (It's hard to say if he's being sincere or darkly witty with his cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," though he manages to make it work both ways.) And the assembled musicians -- among them Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Joe Walsh, Don Henley, and Jim Keltner -- serve up their best licks without taking the show away from Zevon, who, despite his obvious weakness, firmly commands the spotlight. The Wind feels less like a grand final statement of Warren Zevon's career than one last walk around the field, with the star nodding to his pals, offering a last look at what he does best, and quietly but firmly leaving listeners convinced that he exits the game with no shame and no regrets. Sometimes you may want a handgun with the most stopping power you can possibly get. I live in Montana, and have plenty of friends from Alaska, two of the places where wildlife is the biggest in North America. Some people think that huge guns are overkill in any situation. When you have a massive Grizzly bear walking around your tent at night, and you're not sure if he's ready to maul or just curious, is there such thing as a handgun that is too big? I'm not advocating shooting any bear you come across, but in certain situations running away and pepper spray will not work, and you need to rely on whatever weapon you have. That is why we want a gun that is able to stop almost any living thing in its tracks. But what gun can claim to be the Best Handgun Stopping Power?
We have chosen the Smith and Wesson 500 (S&W 500) and its .500 S&W Magnum round as the Best Handgun Stopping Power gun system based off 3 different categories; purpose, round ballistics and barrel length.
Purpose
The original purpose of the S&W500 was to be able to hunt and take down any large game in North America. This Smith and Wesson is considered the "most powerful production revolver in the world today". The S&W 500 shoots a .500 S&W Magnum round, which is the most power production handgun round available today. The round has a velocity of up to 2,075 ft/s and a kinetic energy of up to 3,031 ft-lb, depending on the bullet weight and powder load. Compare that energy to a .40 S&W, which only gets a maximum of 490 ft-lb. You can't get much better stopping power than that in a production handgun.
Barrel Length
The S&W500 comes in a few different barrel lengths, ranging from 2 ¾" out to 10". A longer barrel length means that you will be able to aim the gun better, and the round will have more energy and velocity coming out of the barrel. This is the cartridge will have more time to ignite and fully explode, and pass on more energy to the bullet while it is still in the barrel, a concentrated and directed explosion. The longer barrel is also good for accuracy, because of the increased plane of sight, just like a rifle.

Whether you have an overly dark area in your yard that is far from an electric socket, or just want to enjoy the pleasure of nighttime outdoor lighting that is generated in an environmentally friendly manner without any electric draw, solar outdoor lighting is a wonderful solution.
Solar lights are a completely self contained unit that features a PhotoVoltaic panel to gather energy from the sun, a battery system to store that energy, and a lamp unit that gives off the light. There are various other components integrated into most solar outdoor lighting systems such as photo cells which trigger the lamp to turn on at dusk, and off at dawn.
The variety of solar lights is almost endless. You can choose from garden lights, wall lights, pathway lights, patio and deck lights, even underwater lights for your pool or spa. It is unfortunate but the majority of the solar lights on the market today are of very poor manufacturing quality and the price reflects that. Check out the sources of quality lights by reading specification sheets and reviewing independent test results either online or in consumer magazines.
The lamp units in solar lights are usually LED, or Light Emitting Diodes. Each LED produces the brightness equivalent to a 2 watt incandescent bulb, or 1/20th that of a 40 watt bulb. The better solar lights have more LEDs and thus are brighter.
A high quality solar light can gather sufficient sunlight even in a high latitude winter to stay on for twelve hours at a time. Some of the cheaper units are of such low quality that they barely stay on for a couple of hours even in midsummer. Even a high quality solar light would be hard pressed to provide much light in a location like Juneau, Alaska which is not only over 58 degrees latitude but also cloudy 70% of the time.
The battery system is typically conventional AA rechargeables, and it is advised that good quality batteries such as Duracell or Energizer are used in the systems. Some systems use more exotic and advanced NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries which can handle constant recharging better than the older, more traditional NiCAD (nickel cadmium) units.
For some specialized uses such as pathways, solar light units are avaliable with a motion sensor component so they only turn on when someone is passing by. The advantage of this system is that it can have many more LEDs than a light which is intended to stay on all night long, and therefore are much brighter. Most "all night" solar lights are generally so dim that they really are only suitable for marking areas and decorative uses.
As long as you have reasonable expectations from your solar lights and don't expect to be able to read a book by the light of a twin LED unit, they can be effective and charming additions to any outdoor decor. Add to that the satisfaction of enjoying light directly from the sun in the middle of the night, and solar outdoor lights are a great addition to any outdoor home environment.
