First Drive: 2012 Kia Soul With a lot of LED Lights
The year: 2009. The world economy was ostensibly broken; the unemployment rate was shooting up; and demand for new vehicles (in relative terms) was plunging. The all-new Kia Soul came ashore during this disturbing time, a symbol of prudency in a slick, boxy package.
It turned out to be a hit with more than just Kia's guys on the showroom floor. The widely broadcasted/YouTube'd commercials flaunting the Soul and its oversized hamster sidekicks showed staying power, building brand awareness. The Korean carmaker sold 31,621 Souls in its shortened incipient year on the market, comprising a little more than 10 percent of the marque's sales in the U.S. So far in 2011, the Soul is the Seoul-based automaker's top-selling car in America (65,118 units through July, 22 percent) and second-best-selling vehicle overall (trailing the Sorento crossover).
And it held its own without enhancements. For the 2012 Soul, the former base 1.6-liter inline-four is being replaced with another 1.6, specifically the direct-injected "Gamma" unit outputting 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque (up 16 hp and 8 lb-ft from last year). There's a new 2.0-liter, too. Poached from the "Nu" engine family, the port-injected 2.0 is making its first Stateside foray, serving up 164 horsepower and 148 lb-ft (up 22 hp and 11 lb-ft). The aging five-speed manual and four-speed automatic have been excused from service as well, replaced by six-speed options for both.
Welcome to the present, right? Although we didn't expect a night-and-day difference in forward acceleration, the extra gears in the six-speed auto made for a more congenial drive. Take our recent visit to South Korea, for instance. There are long expressways filled with cars and trucks tunneling through mountains and cutting through small towns. There happened to be a civil defense drill that day, with military personnel. When we weren't distracted by the drab uniforms and shiny rifles, our Soul 2.0-liter effortlessly gobbled up the miles. Due to the number of passes performed on the motorways, the six-speed auto stayed busy, gracefully changing to fourth from sixth before shifting into fifth and back into sixth. The process repeated itself numerous times with no fuss, save for more furor from the wailing four-cylinder.
The biggest gain from the fresh powertrain arrangements are on paper, specifically concerning fuel economy. The new 1.6 is rated 27/35 mpg city/highway, while the 2.0 pulls a close 26/34 mpg city/highway, the same for either transmission. Consider the Soul's predecessors managed 26/31 mpg and 24/30 mpg city/highway, respectively, and it's easy to see the significant improvements. It's a squeamish world nowadays when it comes to carbon emissions and burning preciously expensive oil.
The 2012 Soul's ride is agreeable for a long haul, and we were pleased to find road and wind noise better than anticipated. As it turns out, NVH reduction was a priority for the refreshed Soul. Also on the to-do list were a handful of aesthetic changes and more tech features. Outside, the curves on the front and rear fascias have been accentuated for more definition. LED accent lighting has been fitted beneath the headlights on the top-of-the-line Exclaim model (aka Soul!), along with LED taillights. Heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals are the norm on the Soul+ (the elected naming scheme for the 2.0-liter models) and above. There's the customary assortment of power accessories, keyless entry, USB and auxiliary connections, and a bevy of safety gear. There's even Idle Stop and Go, an option projected to save a bit of fuel in stop-and-go traffic. ISG can be paired with either engine as part of an Eco Package coming later this year, assuming it has an automatic attached.
Unfortunately for the base Soul 1.6-liter, the UVO infotainment setup with a 4.3-inch touch-screen display is found only on the Soul+. And as you'd surmise, the Soul! receives even more special bits and pieces like standout 18-inch alloy wheels, projector headlights, a rearview camera, and more. The Exclaim is also the only trim to pick up available high-end options like leather, automatic climate control, push-button start, navigation (replaces UVO), two-stage front seat warmers (last year's were single-stage), and a seven-speaker Infinity sound system that can be optioned in the Soul+ auto, too.
The Soul isn't for everybody. It's for buyers who don't mind its square look and stance. In fact, said buyers might actually crave the boxy dimensions and its associated perks: an ample back seat (more headroom and legroom than Optima) and clean outward sight lines. Throw in the new equipment, wacky paint colors, impending Special Edition variants, and it's another gem for those who think it is hip to be square.
Overall, the LED lights are widely used most new cars such as LED Dome Lights, LED Daytime Running Lights, and will come out with even more innovation in the future.
